Booking the right disc jockey/entertainment company for your event is probably the most important decision for the greatest outcome of your event! So how do you find the right company? Some people view DJs and entertainment companies as a commodity and look for the lowest price that is available, not knowing there are differences to look for. Here at Mix Master Disc Jockeys, we hear numerous disaster stories of DJ/entertainment companies on a daily basis from potential clientele. They send out DJs with no experience, not knowing what music needs to be played, playing what they want, or just not having it in their music library. Some DJs aren’t interactive with the guests, have poor MCing skills, bring out home audio equipment, and quote too good a price and then raise fees.
This page will enable you to find the right disc jockey/entertainment company for you! It could make the difference between an event that will be memorable and an event that will be a nightmare!
Because your event only happens once in a lifetime, ask questions. The more you ask, the more educated consumer you will become!
Here are some questions you should ask when booking your DJ/entertainment company.
Q. Is your Disc Jockey registered, incorporated/ L.L.C. and/or insured and listed in the phone book yellow pages and 411?
A. Disc Jockeys who have taken the time to register and insure their company state that they are serious business professionals. Mix Master Disc Jockeys is insured for ONE MILLION DOLLARS, registered in the County of Morris, the State of New Jersey. We are listed in 18 phone books, Verizon, Sprint, Yellow Book, 411 & toll free information.
Q. Can your Disc Jockey provide a written contract/agreement and references from previous clients along with a video presentation?
A. When booking, it is very important that all terms of the agreement are confirmed in writing. This will help to avoid any complications or misunderstandings between you and the Disc Jockey. Contract/agreement is the first thing you receive from Mix Master Disc Jockeys.
References are important for any business, and your Disc Jockey should be able to accommodate such a request, along with showing a video of them in action. Remember that every event is different; keep an open mind when viewing a video presentation.
Q. Is there sales tax charge on DJ/entertainment?
A. No, there is no sales tax charge in CT, DEL, MD, NJ, NY, OH, and PA. If a DJ/entertainment company does charge sales tax, DO NOT BOOK THEM! Call your Div. of tax. at your state capital and report them.
Q. Is your Disc Jockey willing to discuss musical selections ahead of time, and is he or she willing to play requests?
A. At Mix Master Disc Jockeys, we want to know everything you want played at your event. We do not play music that we want. This is part of the event planning that you receive from us.
Q. Does your Disc Jockey know the proper procedure and etiquette for your type of event?
A. A professional Disc jockey will become involved with the planning of your special event and will be prepared to handle any announcements or special event of your day. At Mix Master Disc Jockeys, we want to know everything that will go on at your event. We will sit down with you and go over all of the details for your day.
Q. Will your Disc Jockey arrive on time?
A. Punctuality is an ultimate necessity. As a professional business person, your Disc Jockey should be fully aware of their responsibility to you for timely arrival and setup prior to the time of the function. At Mix Master Disc Jockeys, we show up to your event at least one to three hours before start time to do a system check and make sure we understand all of the day/night events. WE DO NOT CHARGE TO SET UP EARLY OR BREAK DOWN.
Q. Will your disc jockey be appropriately dressed for your event?
A. Mix Master Disc Jockeys is always dressed equal to your guests at your event. We always ask what type of dress it is, from informal to black tie. We do not charge any added fee for formal attire.
Q. Is your Disc Jockey a member of an association?
A. Mix Master Disc Jockeys belongs to the Professional Mobile Disc Jockey Alliance (P.M.D.J.A.).
Q. Will your disc jockey listen to my concerns and input?
A. Here at Mix Master Disc Jockeys, we want your input. Without it, we would do things our way as professionals, and as a client, you would not be satisfied with our services.
Q. Does your DJ company have an office that I can visit or do you come to my home?
A. Here at Mix Master Disc Jockeys, we give you the option to come to our offices in Fairfield or Stroudsburg, or we will come to your home, office, or school - whatever is most convenient for you.
Q. Does your Disc Jockey use professional equipment?
A. There is a difference between home audio and professional road-worthy equipment. Pro audio gear is built to withstand the rigors of the road and varied temperature conditions, and the electronic circuitry has built-in protective features to prevent overloads and equipment failure. All of our equipment is all black and gray carpeted Odyssey cases to look professional, not just stacked up on top of each other.
Q. Can your Disc Jockey provide backup equipment and/or personnel in case of emergency?
A1. Even professional equipment can fail on occasion; we always carry a small backup system in hand just in case.
A2. Any number of circumstances may arise between the time you book your DJ and the date of the event, so it is important to know if your Disc Jockey has a backup plan in case of illness or accidents. By networking with other professional DJ companies and our own staff, there will always be a backup plan intact. YOU AS THE CLIENT WILL BE NOTIFIED OF WHAT IS GOING ON AT ALL TIMES... We always ask for all of your phone numbers from your cell to your work. And vise versa, we will give you our team members cell and home numbers too!
Q. Will I know who the DJ/team captain, will be the day of my event?
A. At Mix Master Disc Jockeys you will know who your team captain will be from the day you book with us. We meet at least 4 times prior to your event via e-mail, phone or in person.
Q. Is the music volume at an appropriate level?
A. Some DJs don't care and will blare you right out of the room. We believe that the volume of the music should be kept at a comfortable level, so you and your guests can talk at your tables and not shout over the music. If you want to dance, come onto the floor to hear the music, not at the tables.
Q. As a DJ, do you get interactive with the guests?
A. We love to get out on the dance floor and show you and your guests how to do some of the interactive dances. When we participate, you and your guests will have a great time, and if you do not want to have interactive dances done at your event, we will abide by your wishes.
Q. What format does your music come on and do you download your music off the internet (MP3s)?
A. Here at Mix Master Disc Jockeys all of our music is on Compact Disc; they are the original store bought and promo copies from the record companies. We do not download any of the music off of the internet because the quality of the music is not all that great. Ask your DJ company to view their CD library. If their music is all downloaded (GREEN or BLUE BACK CDRs) off of the internet, do not do business with the company. You can report them to the RIAA at www.riaa.com or call 1-800-BAD-BEAT.
Q. Do you use a computer or MP3 Player to play your music (MP3s)?
A. Here at Mix Master Disc Jockeys, as of now, we will not use a notebook, MP3 player, or a cpu to play our music. Some DJs say it is the greatest thing out there, but when the computer crashes, NO MUSIC+ NO PARTY = ANGRY GUEST. We still use CD players.
Q. Why do most DJ websites not have information listed on them, that I, as a consumer, am looking for, and why don't they have their own domain name?
A1. That is a very good question! Even we here at Mix Master Disc Jockeys can't figure that one out! At Mix Master Disc Jockeys, we want you to know every thing that is available at our web site. Our website is like a store; we want you to see our product that we have to offer to you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
A2. Why do they not have their own domain names? That’s an even better question. If they were true business professionals, they would have their own domain name - not a freebee from a server.
